We had some excessive use of rainbow sprinkles today …

and it was good! Given my rainbow baking history,  these cupcakes were a huge success … as they are completely gone!

We used this cupcake recipe from The Girl Who Ate Everything … moist, delicious and super easy.   A definite must try recipe!

i love … a special delivery

Valentine’s Day was a simple holiday in our house.  We exchanged cards and a little gift.  I made heart shaped pizzas which were a huge hit.  After dinner, the kids each received one more present.  It was wrapped beautifully in a white box with a red ribbon … a little extra surprise for them!  The extra surprise was a special delivery cookie gift set from Perfectly Posh Sweets & Soirees.

Aidan and Ava Kate loved them.  Each cookie was decorated with beautiful detail … perfectly.    So pretty … almost too pretty to eat … almost.  They were delicious.  Here are our cookies with Aidan & Ava Kate’s names on them …

You should have seen the smiles on their faces!  Their eyes lit up when they saw their very own name.  The cookie gift sets are the perfect little surprise for a birthday, holiday or just to say “Hi”.

I love hearing how a business starts … where the inspiration comes from.  I asked Trish to share a bit about her and her sweet company.

A little about Perfectly Post Sweets & Soirees from Trish …

“While I had always admired the work of my Great-Grandmother who made cakes for 60 years, it was completely on accident that Perfectly Posh Sweets & Soirees began! On a whim I took a class to learn how to frost a cake! From that class I created a cute fish themed cake, which I hope will be forever lost in the archives, and to my shock, 3 moms asked me to make cakes for their children’s birthdays! And so out of one fishy themed cake, grew Perfectly Posh Sweets & Soirees where I’ve spent nearly the last 3 years making hundreds of custom cakes! I absolutely love to see a cake in its finished state, but I think what I’ve enjoyed most over the past years is all the friendships that have resulted simply because clients & I had tons of fun in the process! It has been a complete joy to work so many of the same clients each year!

In 2011, I realized that my love for creating fun birthday parties for my children over the past 10 years, was a perfect match to marry with Perfectly Posh! So in addition to creating custom cakes, Perfectly Posh began locally offering complete custom dessert tables, from every fun detail of the display down to every dessert on the table!

This year in 2012, Perfectly Posh is getting a make-over! We are taking a leap and delving into what we love, every inch of parties! March is an exciting month and will include a new website along with a large line of shippable products in a new online store! The online store is a place that moms & party stylists can order small custom cakes & custom desserts from homemade marshmallows, chocolate covered oreos, custom printed & iced cookies, mini-pies, whoopee pies, mini bunt cakes, meringues, cupcake toppers & sugar flowers!  We believe that desserts like recipes are simply inspiration, each item we create is custom from its design, flavor, color choices and every little detail!”

Perfectly Post Sweets & Soirees offers lots of designs as well as custom orders.  I have my eye on these cute pig cookies  which would be perfect for an Olivia birthday party…

Loving these sweet cupcakes too …

I can’t wait to see everything that Perfectly Posh Sweets & Soirees has in store!  You should definitely stop by her facebook page to see more cake, cookie and dessert table photos!

crafty … stitched valentines

These are actually the valentine’s that Ava Kate did last year.  They are easy and fun … and can be made with items you likely already have!

You will need …

  • card stock …. any color
  • scrap fabric
  • fabric stiffener or spray starch
  • sewing machine & thread
  • printer
  • circle cutter and/or scissors

Using fabric stiffener, I treated my scrap fabric.  You could use spray starch and iron the fabric as well. I used a shabby floral and a pink polka dot for my fabrics.  The amount of fabric you need depends on the number of valentines you are making … but about the size of an 8.5 x 11″ piece of paper should be enough fabric.

After treating my fabric, I created a simple “Happy Valentine’s Day” word document.   I used a labels template that was already on my computer and then printed it on card stock.  Each “Happy Valentine’s Day” is spaced perfectly and makes cutting your paper easy.

I used a circle cutter to cut my circles out of the fabric.  The circle cutter will only work with fabric that has been stiffened.  If you don’t have a circle cutter, you can always cut circles the old fashioned way:)  Find a couple jars around the house to trace the circles.  A spice jar or sprinkles lid are perfect for this.  You will want 2 different sizes.

My circle sizes were 1.5″  and 1″  … and work perfectly for layering!  I cut the valentines to size and had Ava sign her name to all of them.  Here is what they look like with the fabric circles layered over each other.

A simple straight stitch on the sewing machine completes them …

I love the how the fabric circles give the valentine a little dimension.  You can fold them forward a bit to make them stick out even more …

Attach these to your little one’s favorite candy and you are done!

handmade ornaments …

With some lovely inspiration from Dear Lillie and ARMommy, I decided to make a few handmade ornaments.  I only used items I had around the house … hoping to avoid any store trips with my ear infection infested 5 year old.

All you need is…

  • card stock in a light/white color …  I used a white linen card stock
  • printer
  • darker color card stock for the backer
  • twine
  • scrap fabric
  • hot glue gun
  • scissors
  • hole punch

After printing my images on card stock, I made a couple fabric embelishments to add to the ornaments.

The fabric tassel idea came from ARMommy … so easy and fun!  I used a green jingle bell on my son’s ornament … so it wasn’t “too girly” per his suggestion.

How are you spreading Christmas cheer?

a little bit of holiday decor …

I haven’t shared much holiday decor lately so I thought I would share our Christmas mantel.  I love decorating the mantel different every year … but still using a lot of the same decorations.  The color scheme is fairly neutral with a little bit of green and sparkle.

I ordered the stocking from Garnet Hill a couple years ago after Christmas while they were on sale.  They are a super dark navy with a green piping trim.  LOVE them.  This year I didn’t use traditional stocking hangers, but instead bought some Scotch brand removable plastic hooks.  I placed them flat on the mantle, hooked the stocking and then covered them with a bit of greenery.

The Happy Holidays banner is an after Christmas find from a local craft store from last year.  The cream reindeer is from Wisteria … love everything about Wisteria!

The acorns are from Natalily Designs.  Our Elf, Criddle, has been watching over everyone atop his reindeer friend.  Tricky little guy.

On a side note … Has anyone else been using the, “Do you want me to go tell the elf what you just did?” line.  It is very effective.

Happy Thursday!
