a simple birthday party

I have been thinking about what to do for my youngest’s upcoming birthday.  I am torn between a party with friends or a simple party with just family.  With a little tutorial help from this fabulous blog, I did a sketch of what a party looks like on paper (to me) …

A simple birthday by Modern Frills

I showed it to the birthday girl.  Her response was simply, “Oooh, that looks like fun!”  Well, I guess I am on the right track!

I am going to be playing around with these graphics.   I am not quite done.  Next step is to figure out how to make the background transparent!  You just might see them again very soon!

party inspiration …. over the rainbow

It’s a good thing as she looks like Punky Brewster every time she strutts out of her bedroom (as is evident here).  She is a walking rainbow for sure.  A rainbow birthday tee is also a very popular custom order request with my little shop.  It is such a happy theme.

I came across this invite by SwishDesigns and completely fell in love.  Here is my take on a rainbow soiree planned around this adorable invite …

party inspiration … Retro Cherry

I have been pondering my blog and what it should be about.  I am going to be trying a few new things this summer … not sure which will actually stick but I am mixing it up a bit.  First on my list is a new series on party inspiration.

Modern Frills was built on making a birthday a bit extra special with a unique, colorful tee.  The idea is to take one of my tees and build a party around it … my way.  I love pulling a party together … with simple touches and DIY crafts.

Here is my take on a Retro Cherry party …

1. Retro Cherry tee by Modern Frills  2. Cherry Cookies by i am baker 3. Garland by Couture by Ayca 4. Invitation by Polkadot Prints Studio 5. Red Stripe Paper Straws from Shop Sweet Lulu 6. Cherry Lollipop Favors by The TomKat Studio 7. Suitcase Set by Shop Sweet Lulu 8. Cherry Cupcakes by Cupcake Bake Shop 9. Paper Baking Cups by Shop Sweet Lulu

PS … If you can’t find those adorable lollipops, you can make them yourself.  Buy some mint green washi tape and some red lollipops.  Wrap the washi tape around the sticks. Attach 2 together with more tape … hinging them together and creating the same look!

crafty: fabric flowers

The backdrop of Ava’s dessert table was made up of the Happy Birthday banner from Anna and Blue Paperie and simple fabric flowers…

I found some amazing kitchen towels and loved the vintage look but wasn’t sure how I was going to use them for the party.  Then I came across this simple tutorial over at Jones Design Company for gathered flowers.  It clicked…love that feeling.

Using the kitchen towels and some scrap fabric I had, I created these…

The only change I made to the tutorial was the addition of fabric stiffener, since  I needed my flowers to hold their shape while attached to the wall (another fabric stiffener idea here).  I treated the fabric with the stiffener before cutting the petal shapes from the tutorial…it worked perfectly!
